Short description:

The course will consist in a close reading of the selected texts by Michael Walzer dealing with war ethics along with the translation of their fragments into Polish.

Full description:

The series of classes will consist of two parts. In the first part, students will become acquainted with the general problems of contemporary ethics of war in its two variants - the classical theory (M. Walzer) and the revisionist theory (J. Macmahan). The second part of the course will consist in working with selected philosophical texts by Michael walzer dealind with war etthics. While analysing/translating fragments of the selected text, students will become familiarised with the basic problems raised in the contemporary debates on the ethics of military operations. When translating the philosophical text, particular attention will be paid to the precise recognition and proper rendering of its original meaning, the lexical correctness of the translation, as well as the naturalness of the applied stylistic / idiomatic solutions.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

Students should

*develop the ability to analyse philosophical texts written in a foreign language as well as

*extend their competences in the translation of philosophical texts from English into Polish

*acquire the competences necessary to translate difficult philosophical texts from Polish into English

*acquire the skills of deepening their linguistic competences by use of available sources

Translating fragments of the article on war ethics will also give students the opportunity to

*become familiar with the general issues considered in the said field.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The evaluation will be based on the active participation of students in classes, and a fragment of the analyzed text (500 words) individually translated into Polish by individual students.
