Short description:

A possible short lecture in grammar of classical Attic dialect will be supported by the original sentences and fragments of texts from different periods.

Full description:

Obligatory classes of the Greek - 30 hours per semester , 60 hours per year .

Grading - tests .

The aim of the course is

- to become skilful at reading and writing in Classical Greek,

- to find ways and tools for independent, unassisted translation.

Participants of the course will learn the basic principles of grammar and specific vocabulary and guidelines for the use of the original texts

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

Knowledge: The student 1. knows the ancient Greek alphabet; 2. recognizes the basic parts of speech; 3. is able to explain grammatical forms.

Abilities: The student: 4. is able to read the ancient Greek alphabet and interprets all its signs; 5. can write and use the dictionary; 6. understands simple sentences

Competences: The student: 7. reads simple sentences with comprehension; 8. realizes the necessity of working with a dictionary, 9. is aware of word meanings in dependence of the author, time of origin and subject area, among others; 10. cares about linguistic correctness in translation

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Knowledge: To rate a grade of 2 - F : the student does not know the alphabet and is unable to differentiate between basic words;To rate a grade of 3 - D : the student recognizes letters, names accent marks, indicates grammatical forms and is able to give their names, but does not combine particular words into sentences;To rate a grade of 4 - B : the student knows the alphabet, can read and write, tries to stress the right syllables, confuses grammatical forms but can make use of help;To rate a grade of 5 - A : the student can read and write with fluency and with accordance to all the rules; knows the relevant declensions and conjugations;AbilitiesTo rate a grade of 2 - F: the student cannot read or write;To rate a grade of 3 - D: the student knows the alphabet ‘in theory’, puts words together by syllabication, indicates the accents but does not apply them in reading, does not put theory into practice;To rate a grade of 4 – B: the student can read and write, tries to emphasize the right syllables, compares particular inflectional forms and verifies them;To rate a grade of 5 (bdb – A): the student reads and writes fluently in accordance with all the rules, solves grammatical problems on his own;CompetencesTo rate a grade of 2 - F: the student does not understand even very simple sentencesTo rate a grade of 3 - D: the student translates simple sentences with a lot of help from the teacher,To rate a grade of 4 - B: the student translates simple sentences with only small hints from the teacher or a classmateTo rate a grade of 5 – A: the student translates simple sentences on his own, cares about linguistic correctness in translation, appreciates the importance of working with a dictionary

The final grade consists of:

- an assessment of the student’s preparation for each week’s classes

- passing all quick-check tests

- the student’s activity in class

Assessment methods:

Current evaluation- checking home writing assignments (only handwritten Greek script) – (2-5)

- evaluation of the student’s preparation for class (pass or no)

- evaluation of quick-check tests – 50% - 3 - is a pass; 90% - 5

- checking the student’s knowledge of the alphabet - assessment of the student’s reading skills

- final test at the end of the semester (2-5, 35% is a grade of dst –D)
