Short description:

During the lectures, students learn about the issues related to the way in which the views of nature shape the philosophical and sociological concepts of society, culture and politics. During the lectures, students will get acquainted with selected thinkers from the period from antiquity to modern times, who will represent different views on the functioning of society. The aim of the lectures will be to show how the views of the discussed thinkers were informed by the natural science and ideas about nature of that time. The lecture will also address the opposite question - how does society influence the natural sciences.

Full description:

The lecture will discuss the issues of using the threads of natural science in philosophy and social sciences, as well as the influence of society on exact sciences. Individual classes will take the form of case studies - they will discuss selected influential figures in the world of philosophy, sociology and natural sciences, whose views will be analyzed in terms of how the character's vision of nature influenced his vision of society.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about the views of not only philosophers (such as Plato, Hobbes, Rousseau), biologists (such as Cope, Dawkins), but also sociologists, psychologists and anthropologists (such as Frazer, Durkheim, Freud). The classes will show the multitude of research perspectives on the discussed issue, which will allow students to understand how the social views of even the most outstanding thinkers have always been determined by the state of contemporary science.
