Short description: |
The seminar aims to achieve two goals. The first goal is to discuss basic research issues examined within moral philosophy. The second goal is to support and supervize student's individual projects aimed at preparing their MA theses. |
Full description: |
The first aspect of the seminar is focused on matters dealt with in the field of moral philosophy. Firstly, an overview will be given of the main issues discussed in the literature of the subject. Particular attention will be paid to the possibility of defining the subject of ethics, as well as defining the main ethical traditions, with particular emphasis put on their key assumptions . Then, the seminar will focus on the most important positions in contemporary metaethical debates. Three theoretical conceptions will be discussed: moral intuitionism, emotivism, and prescriptivism. As part of the analysis of individual theoretical proposals, the dilemmas connected with them will be exposed . The discussion on non-naturalistic theories will be complemented by the presentation of alternative approaches: contemporary ethical naturalism, the renewed theory of natural law (J. Finnis) and American communitarianism (A. Macintyre). Discussing particular metaethical positions will be accompanied by the presentation of selected issues of applied ethics. As part of the second goal of the seminar, students' progress in preparing their MA theses will be discussed. At the end of the scheduled course, students will present a detailed plan of their own master's theses. |
