Short description:

The aim of the module is to familiarize the student with the methodology of planning and implementing scientific projects and using advanced statistical methods during the implementation of scientific research.

 computer-based exercises,

Analiza interactive data analysis in statistical packages

 multimedia presentations

The learning outcomes are verified in the form of the ability to plan scientific research in the form of writing a research project and a practical exam that checks the understanding of statistical tools.

Exam for a grade

Full description:

The first part of the course will be devoted to preparing an effective application for research funding:

 range of possibilities and the most popular methods of financing scientific research (including NCN)

 principles and rules of substantive preparation of grant applications

 online libraries and scientific journals

 constructing budgets and schedules of scientific projects

 evaluation and settlement of scientific projects

commercialization of research results and management of your intellectual property

The extensive part of the course will be devoted to statistical methods - largely in the form of practical exercises using the STATGRAPHIC CENTURION package, including:

 stages of scientific research (principles of goal formation, scientific hypotheses, falsification) statistics as a tool for testing hypotheses

 parametric and nonparametric statistical methods (ANOVA, MANOVA, a priori and a posteriori hypotheses, simple and multiple regression analysis, Chi2 test, tests testing the sample distribution)

 multidimensional statistical methods (cluster analysis, general linear model)

In addition to the application of the methods mentioned above, the emphasis will also be placed on the issue of conditions in which a given type of analysis is allowed to be performed, interpretation of results and methods of presenting the results of analyzes in MA theses, articles and other types of publications.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

In terms of knowledge, the student:

Understands the importance of empirical research in explaining biological phenomena and knows the principles of statistical methodologies used in natural sciences.

Understands the need for systematic reading of scientific and popular science magazines in order to broaden and deepen knowledge.

Knows the principles of planning scientific and application research and their financing

He can formulate statistical hypotheses and correctly construct a research problem and verify statistical hypotheses.

Demonstrates knowledge of the use of statistical programs

In terms of skills:

He can prepare an application for funding scientific research and effectively manage a research project.

Is able to plan and carry out research tasks under the guidance of a scientific supervisor.

Can search for current scientific literature in the field of biology and neuroscience in Polish and in English

Shows criticism in the analysis and selection of information from scientific literature, the Internet and especially available in mass media.

He uses advanced statistical methods and computational techniques adequate to the scientific problems posed

Is able to interpret empirical data and formulate appropriate conclusions using the STATGRAPHIC CENTURION statistical package.

In terms of social competence:

Can independently plan his own scientific career

The student is able to plan the team's work, in particular in the scope of assigning duties and time management, respecting the opinion of other team members.

Can be self-critical and draw conclusions based on an analysis of their skills, attitudes and actions

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Practical exam:

 design part: preparation of a research project.

 statistical part: an exam consisting in checking whether a student has acquired the ability to choose the appropriate statistical test for the structure of data and to process this data using the STATGRAPHIC CENTURION program.

The course will include partial credit in the form of practical application (presentation on computers) of the procedures learned.

The student should not miss more than two classes.
