Progress in medicine and biotechnology in 20th century made deep interference in the human life, especially at critical moments; further research show that influence on the evolution of humans will be possible. This is reason of some question about possible borders of medical research and procedures. These questions and answers which are given by different thinkers are the subject of the lecture. In the first part of the lecture some basic philosophical controversies are mentioned; the thesis given are the fundament of resolution of specific issues. In the second part exemplary solution of some question is showed as a model answer the present and future question |

Because of widely presented in media cases and engaging many people political discourse on new law regulations bioethical questions have become popular. Either some simple methods of making ethical decisions at medical units or regulations which are acceptable by heterogeneous society are desired. During the classes bioethics is described as interdisciplinary science which connects philosophy, biology, medicine, law and social sciences. Philosophical fundaments of general principles and models of making particular decisions are presented. Also institutional aspects of bioethics (eg. commissions, institutes and conventions) is discussed. Content: 1. The beginning and development of bioethics 2. Bioethics as discourse and interdisciplinary science 3. Different models of bioethics 4. Some schemes of argumentation (eg. double effect, slippery slope) 5. Institutional aspects of bioethics 6. Dispute on human nature 7. Quality or sanctity of human life 8. Human right as possible base of bioethics 9. Assisted Procreation 10. Embryo status and abortion 11. Gene manipulation and cloning 12. Experimentation on humans 13. Transplantation 14. Interference in human nature 15. Prolonging life and euthanasia |

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS: |
Knowledge: student defines basic bioethical notions, knows the origin of bioethics and its main trends (and their representatives). Student recognizes and distinguishes methods of bioethics. Skills: student interprets and compares theoretical basis of main bioethical currents, is able to explain how theoretical ethical and axiological assumptions determine practical thesis. Student can explain necessity of bioethics as a theory and practical knowledge. Competences: student is able to define and justify his/her own bioethical choices and to participate current bioethical discourse. ECTS: presence at lectures - 30 preparing to lectures and individual reading - 40 consultations - 10 preparing to a test - 30 TOTAL TIME 110 [110 : 30 (25) =4] ECTS POINTS – 4 |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
- knows bioethical issues and their relationship to progress of medicine; - knows current trend in bioethics; - is able to give bioethical judgement and its reason; - knows Polish and international law regulations connected with bioethics. Assessment method: written test and oral presentation. |
