Short description:

Objectives: The aim of the seminar is to introduce students to ethical aspects of psychologist functioning in various professional fields. Variety of moral problems, dilemmas and situations are discussed in relation to codes of ethics and ethical principles of professional psychologists. Aaccepted by most psychologists ways to respond and act in ethically relevant situations are the basement of discussions. The main objective of the course is to raise awareness of the existence of diverse ethical issues in psychological professions and to stimulate moral sensitivity in working with other people.

The effect of education: knowledge of psychologist codes of ethics, understanding the meaning and scope of applicability of these standards. Awareness of the ethical dimensions of psychologist work, moral sensitivity in professional relationships.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of psychology.

PROFESSIONAL ETHICS FOR A PSYCHOLOGIST:

GENERAL EFFECTS OF EDUCATION

Skills: possesses an ability to apply information contained in, primarily, the Code of Professional Ethics of the Polish Psychology Association (as well as other introduced documents), that is to use this information in carrying on the work of a psychologist and in solving ethical issues associated with it.

Competencies: displays an ability to use the acquired skills in both professional and community work within an ethical framework which includes questions of responsibility and autonomy. Keeps a healthy criticism in terms of expressing of opinions, discusses, is able to work in a team, retains an openness towards the opinions of others and ensures that others are given sufficient space to express them, demonstrates responsibility for his own words, expresses judgements carefully but unequivocally, takes up initiatives aimed at gaining additional information, demonstrates a creative approach towards problem solving, is able to accept the convictions of others and is able to recognise there may be several different solutions for a given issue.

SKILLS (K_U02) - knowledge gained by the participant ought to be sufficient for him to be able to:

• correctly recognise areas of research and practice which may contain potential inherent hazards for his clients and for people taking part in the research

• apply in professional practice such directions and proscriptions as formulated by codes of ethics accepted by the body of psychologists and to use those directions and proscriptions for the good of the client

• in all work (including research, diagnostic, expert work, assistance) to refer only to such theories of psychology and methods of measurement, diagnosis and psychological help (such as psychotherapy) as have been attested through empirical verification; for ethical reasons does not reach for concepts and methods which lie outside of the science of psychology; possesses skills which allow him to recognise and reject those

• not engage in activities which may result in a conflict of interest

• not engage in activities which may impair proper professional scientific conduct - plagiarism, falsification of research results.

PROFESSIONAL AND SOCIAL COMPETENCIES (K_K05)

In 1: “Ethics - applied ethics - psychological ethics” :

in order to understand the limitations of professional activity, a psychology graduate is able to apply : basic theories of ethics (U05_01). In terms of competencies the psychologist uses the language of theories of ethics to explain to the society the intricacies of the profession of a psychologist as a profession of public trust (OS_K05_01).

In 2: “Ethical aspects of research activities of a psychologist (towards persons taking part in scientific studies)”:

a psychologist undertakes only such research activities and practical work (diagnosis, expert, assistance) as do not impact negatively on human dignity and respect the fundamental principles of informed consent (to take part in research or practical work as carried out by the psychologist), confidentiality, privacy and (sometimes) anonymity (OS_U05_02); avoids conflict of interest (OS_U05_03). In practical terms this manifests itself through the psychologist taking measures to ensure that any potential clients or other recipients of his services are aware of the fundamental limitations imposed by the primacy of professional ethics over either the effectiveness of one’s work or one’s own interests (OS_U05_02).

In 3. “Ethical aspects of diagnosis, expert work and assistance of a psychologist”:

a psychologist promotes in public only such methods as have sound theoretical basis and strong empirical evidence (OS_U05_04); possesses competencies sufficient to strongly oppose psychological services being offered by people without a psychology degree and appropriate experience in the field, and to inform society and appropriate authorities or institutions of this. (OS_K05_03).

In 4. “Familiarity with the Code of Professional Ethics of the Polish Psychology Association “ :

a psychologist is able to translate directives into actions in such as way as to minimise deviation from the ethical standard as contained in the Code of Professional Ethics (OS_U05_05); promotes ethical actions and activities within his own professional circle (OS_U05_06); possesses sufficient competencies so as to recognise pseudo-psychological “knowledge” and not to refer to such in public (OS_K05_04).
