Short description:

Objectives: The aim of the course is broadening students' knowledge of stages of scientific research and preparing them for writting scientific texts.

Prerequisites: Interest in the subject of individual differences in children's cognitive and socio-emotional functioning, honesty in the approach to the searching for literature, conducting research and preparing written work.

Full description:

During the course students become familiar with the rules of conduct empirical research and the preparation of scientific texts.

Students will learn each discussed during classes issue in practice. In small groups they will conduct research on children's cognitive and socio-emotional functioning (topics will be given by lecturer). On this basis students will write papers.

Knowledge:

1.The student lists and describes the stages in research process.

2.The student understands the principles of conducting the research.

3.The student is aware of the guidelines for writing scientific reports

4.The student is able to describe the most common methodological mistakes committed by scientists

Skills:

1. The student is able to apply appropriately the acquired data about the stages and principles of conducting the research in planning his/her own studies.

2. The student is able to choice and use different methods and tests to diagnose human's behaviors, individual differences and personality.

3. The student is able to use appropriate statistical methods to interpret empirical data (using SPSS packet).

4. The student is able to find and appropriate use bibliographical sources.

Competencies:

1.The student is conscious of the risk of possible methodological mistakes, that could appear during planning and conducting research.

2.The student demonstrates scientific responsibility and reliability.

3. The student is sensivite to ethical issues connected to research.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Assessed will be:

- Written paper based on conducted studies

- Active participation and involvement in research

Attendance is mandatory (3 absences are allowed)

The subject of assessment of paper will be: knowledge of rules of conduct empirical research and the preparation of scientific texts, mastering the standards of writing a scientific text, meritorical quality of paper, the selection and use of sources, the accuracy of testing, calculations and interpretac results.
