Level of the course: intermediate

Course Objectives:

Ability of doing hermeneutics of masterpieces of contemporary literature; the development of imaginative interpretation. The ability of placing the works in their close biographical, historical, historical literary, philosophical, and theological contexts. The skill of synthesizing interpreting observations; incorporation of the paradigms of knowledge about the literary genres; works of individual authors; literary currents, prevailing aesthetics and models of reception of literature. The ability to embed the observations in a wide anthropological perspective - in the context of questions about man: the perspective of his destiny, the cause and purpose, and the sense of his of existence.

Entrance requirements: knowledge of poetics and methods of analysis of a literary work; knowledge of the history of Polish literature at secondary school level.

Course content:

The main trends of development of Polish contemporary literature. Contemporary literature and the history (Parnicki)towards the existential experience, towards value, towards the sacred Anthropological horizon of contemporary literature. Metaphysical horizons of Czesław Miłosz's works. Models of non-fiction prosa . The paradoxes of existence (Gombrowicz, Mrożek). Literature towards evil (Buczkowski, Odojewski,Herling-Grudzinski,Iwaszkiewicz). Private universes (Schulz, Leśmian,Czechowicz, Białoszewski). Poetry to nothingness (Różewicz); poetry of doubt (Szymborska), poetry to the value (Herbert). Mainstream of religious poetry, prose, and drama. ."Peasant" current (Tadeusz Nowak, Myśliwski). Adventure of the New Wave.
