Course Level: Basic

Course Objectives: The aim of the course is to provide students with knowledge of the construction and functioning of the subsystem of language syntax. The course includes a systematic presentation of the syntactic description by Zenon Klemensiewicz, formal syntax and fundamental issues of semantics of the sentence.

The lecture is intended as a starting point for analysis in group classes, and independent reading.

Entrance requirements: Knowledge and skills in the descriptive grammar of the Polish language part. I.

Course contents:

1. Place of syntax in the language system: inflection and syntax, semantics and syntax, the problem of a syntactic unit: sentence, expression, announcement, notification; syntactic group and an element, a sentence and a group; syntactic unions and their types.

2. Semantic and logical structure of the expression: the content components, problems of references and modalities and their reflection in the syntax of the expression; thematic and rematic structure of the expression.

3. Syntactic dependencies: description of a simple sentence According to Klemensiewicz and predicative/argumentative syntax.

4.Syntactic connotation as a primary mechanism for creating a sentence. Connotational types of Polish lexemes. Disputable problems of connotation.

5. Sentence patterns of Polish.

6. Syntactic accommodation as a mechanism for creating a group. Accommodative properties of Polish forms and lexemes. Non-accommodated units and words outside the union.

7. Description problems of complex structures: the semantically complex structures expressed by a simple sentence. The definition and delimitation of the compound sentence and the mechanisms of its creation. Description of compound sentences in terms of Zenon Klemensiewicz. Types of sentences compounded paratactically and hypotactically - Klemensiewicz and others' presentations..

8. Non-sentence expressions in Polish language.

Methods of assessment: The course ends with a written exam after the winter semester.
