Level of the course: basic

Short Course Description:

exercises "History of Polish past literature" focus on the analysis and interpretation of outstanding works of literature of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque and Enlightenment.

Objectives of the course:

a. knowledge and understanding by students the literary works of the past Polish literature;

b. The student is able to do historical and literary analysis of the work;

c. The student is able to interpret on his own the works of Polish literature of the past.

Entrance requirements:

Basic knowledge of Polish literature of the past (works, authors, genres, literary trends). Knowledge of major events of historical periods.

Full description:

Course contents:

1) "Mother of God" ("Bogurodzica") is not only a cultural literary relic. It gave to Polish culture the basic original core (John Paul II) - "Mother of God" - carmen patrium.

2) "Zgoła niechaj to każdy wie, iżem ja, Polakom pisząc, Polakom folgować chciał, przeto opuściłem siła rzeczy, które abo nie należały Polszcze, abo rzecz zatrudnić a poczciwe uszy obrazić mogły" (Ł. Górnicki, "Dworzanin polski") ("The Polish Courtier") - the Renaissance art of translation.

3) "A nie daj czasowi nigdy darmo upłynąć; widzisz, żeć to szkodliwa utrata, kto czas marnie traci, bo się już ten wrócić nigdy nie może" (M. Rej, "Żywot człowieka poczciwego") - "The Life of an Honest Man" Mikolaj Rej -- the Renaissance parenetic work.

4) Klemens Janicki - the master of personal lyric.

5) "Ludzkie przygody, ludzkie noś" (The human adventures of people wear) (J. Kochanowski, "Tren XIX") - "Laments" by Jan Kochanowski - synthesis of philosophical, ethical and moral values of John of Czarnolas.

6) "Gofred or Jerusalem Delivered" by Piotr Kochanowski - old Polish national epic.

Assessment methods:

final assessment consists of partial evaluations (oral presentation, written test); active participation in the classes and attendance are also taken into account

Student characterizes the history of literature from the Middle Ages to the Baroque

Differentiate between tendencies and trends in European medieval and early modern culture

Recognizes the modifications and evolution of the history of literature; identificates different philosophical contexts

Analyzes mediaeval, renaissance and baroque literary texts

Comprehends the necessity of advancement of knowledge
