Short description:

Level: advanced

Goals and objectives:

Presentation of selected works of world's literature in their national context, as well as from diachronic and inter-textual perspective. Discussing the reception of these literary works, and evolution of their interpretation, and also interpreting alterations with respect to an original text, with particular consideration of the role of translation.

Requirements: participation in classes, familiarity with obligatory literature

Full description:

The objective of lectures devoted to specified literary works is as follows:

- outlining historical background and literary, and ideological context of the literary work in question

- tutoring students so that they capable of self-interpretation

- presenting the significance of reception of the work in question to its popular interpretation

- presenting how a literary work is inscribed in a cultural paradigm

- presenting local and national color of a literary work, specific to the literary work, and locating it in national literature canon

- analysis of poetics and ways of illustration, as well as esthetic transformations throughout literary ages.

What is equally important is a question of mutual influence and inspiration, motifs, images, keywords, debates and discussions conducted beyond temporary and spatial boundaries.

Reception of a literary work is dependent to a large extent on its translation, and therefore 'canonic' translations of masterpieces will also be presented.

Forms of assessment: passing examination testing historical - literary knowledge, and analytical skills.

Po cyklu wykładów student dobrze orientuje się w literaturze angielskiej, potrafi dokonać samodzielnej analizy utworu z literatury angielskiej i odnieść ją do literatury polskiej.
