Short description: |
A course of “Molecular basis of neurodegeneration” includes lectures that present the current knowledge on molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration. The main processes leading to neuronal degeneration are discussed, including autoimmune reactions, disturbances of the ubiquitin-proteasome system, oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy, and metals brain accumulation. The role of individual mechanisms in the pathogenesis of the major and most common neurodegenerative disorders namely, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson;s diseases, Huntington’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and prion diseases. The lecture course ends with themes on molecular biomarkers and neuroprotection strategies of neurodegenerative disease. |
Full description: |
The student should acquire knowledge of: methods of communication between cells, as well as between the cell and the extracellular matrix, as well as signaling pathways in the cell and examples of disorders in these processes leading to the development of cancer and other diseases; relationships between factors disturbing the balance of biological processes and physiological and pathophysiological changes; external and internal pathogens, modifiable and non-modifiable; basic directions of therapy development, in particular possibilities of cell therapy, gene and targeted therapy in specific diseases; basic concepts of pathogenesis of mental disorders.
