Short description:

Objectives. Student is able to:

a) in the field of knowledge - to formulate the concept of victimology as a science, characterize the area and research issues, the historical stages of development, to define key terms, describe the main typologies (the victims of crises, et al.) explain the determinants of individual adaptation to the situation of injustice and explain various defense strategies against stress.

b) in the area of ​​skills - be able to use the theoretical knowledge to analyze a particular difficult situation, analyze its determinants and course, to assess the effects of impact, and propose possible ways to help the injured person;

c) in the field of attitudes - be aware of the difficulties of adaptation faced in the life of the victim, sensitive to the victim factors; be ready to helping a man in a difficult situation / crisis.

Prerequisites: credit course "Psychology" and "Social pathologies of the elements of criminology."

Course contents:

The concept of victimology as a science, its tasks, the problems of contemporary research and development trends. Fields of contemporary victimology (theological, natural, organic, individual, social groups, social, criminal, new victimology). The importance of practical orientation in victimology in order to reduce the effects of the impact of an evil situation in life, health and psychosocial functioning human being. Victimology relations with other sciences.

Historical aspects of the development of victimology as a science of the victims of crime. The founders and former researchers criminal victimology (Hans von Hentig, Henri Ellenberger, Benjamin Mendelsohn).

Difficult situations and crises in human life and how to react. Definitions and types of threats to human functioning in society. The concept of sacrifice and the process of victimization. The concept of the rights of victims. Typologies of victims in victimology due to different criteria (individual characteristics of victims involved in the genesis of crime; mixed typologies of victims of crime).

Factors of vulnerability of the victims in the process of victimization (predestination, provocation, negligence, nuisance). Characteristics of selected groups of victims (those who are homeless, victims of domestic violence, rape) and characterization of the mechanisms of victimization. The theoretical justification of the process of creating a "scapegoat".

Definition and classification of traumatic situations. Determinants of individual adaptation to the situation of victimization (potency psychosocial stressors, the force of injury, possession of prior traumatic experiences, et al.). Overloading psychophysical exhaustion as a factor. Style of explanation of events and human self-esteem. The importance of a sense of internal control for the process of adaptation of the individual.

Response to stress factors (confrontation, distancing, self-control, seeking social support, taking responsibility for the problem, escape, planned problem solving, positive re-evaluation). The strategies of defense against stress in a difficult situation (classification Kuh; typology Seligman). The importance of entrusting their well-being of the higher forces and the role of various forms of social support in the adaptation process of the individual. Internal mechanism of analgesia.

Defensive strategies do not lead to adaptation (no sense of control, learned helplessness, ritualization, pitfalls psychological effect, Stockholm syndrome, et al.).

The vulnerability of the victims of chronic victimization process in light of research results.

Assessment: credit with a grade.

Condition Assessment: the appropriate response to a set of questions and tasks. Theoretical question included grading is formulated so as to check the effects of training in the field of knowledge of practical task (problematic situation) is used to test skills. During the interview, on how to resolve the problem situation, examined student attitudes are also listed for operational purposes.

Knowledge:

EK-1. Student is able to formulate the concept of victimology as a science, characterize the field and the research activity, the historical stages of development;

EK-2. The student is able to define key terms, describe typologies of victims and typologies of emergencies.

Skills:

EK-3. Student is able to explain the determinants of individual adaptation to the situation of victimization and explain different strategies of defense against stress.

EK-4. The student knows how to use the theoretical knowledge to analyze a particular difficult situation, analyze the conditions and the course, to assess the victim's behavior in the face of stress and the effects of impact of the psychosocial functioning of the victim.

Competence:

EK - 5 Students can be aware of the difficulties of adaptation victims, vulnerable to the actions of the factors leading to victimization, to be open to helping a man in a difficult situation / crisis.
