Short description: (in Polish)

This course pays particular attention to the causes and consequences of population change. Discussed topics will include fertility decline and changes in the age pattern of family formation, childbearing outside marriage, changes in partnership behaviour (cohabitation, marriage, separation, divorce), the context of fertility, population ageing, mortality and life expectancy, migration into Europe, and the policy implications of recent demographic trends.

Course aims to familiarize students with key concepts, major debates, and recent research associated with the main population processes and trends in European countries and puts them in their socio-economic context. Students will also be introduced methods and data sources used in the study of population and social demography. The aim of the course is to help students acquire a basic "literacy" of the leading ideas and research directions in the field of population studies. Demographic methods and measures are only covered to the extent necessary to understand substantive issues.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS: (in Polish)

1. posiada podstawową wiedzę o miejscu socjologii w systemie nauk oraz o jej relacjach z innymi dyscyplinami;

2. potrafi wykorzystać podstawową wiedzę teoretyczną i pozyskiwać dane do analizowania konkretnych procesów i zjawisk społecznych (kulturowych, politycznych, prawnych, gospodarczych) w zakresie socjologii'

3. potrafi właściwie analizować przyczyny i przebieg konkretnych procesów i zjawisk społecznych (kulturowych, politycznych, prawnych, gospodarczych) w zakresie socjologii;

4. potrafi prognozować procesy i zjawiska społeczne (kulturowe, polityczne, prawne, ekonomiczne) z wykorzystaniem standardowych metod i narzędzi w zakresie socjologii;

5. posiada umiejętność rozumienia i analizowania zjawisk społecznych;

6. potrafi współdziałać i pracować w grupie, przyjmując w niej różne role;

7. umie uczestniczyć w przygotowaniu projektów społecznych (politycznych, gospodarczych, obywatelskich), uwzględniając aspekty prawne, ekonomiczne i polityczne.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria: (in Polish)

The course will be a mix of lectures and discussion. In order to fully participate in the discussion, students will need to keep up-to-date with the readings. Lectures will highlight important issues and explicate demographic evidence and problems of measurement. Demographic methods and measures are only covered to the extent necessary to understand substantive issues. The course will emphasize the development of skills in understanding and interpreting research findings. Students will also have to prepare presentations.

Participation is obligatory. Students can have no more than two unexcused absences.

Final exam - written 40%

Presentations - 40%

Active participation in classes - 20%
