Full description:

This course pays particular attention to the causes and consequences of population change. Discussed topics will include fertility decline and changes in the age pattern of family formation, childbearing outside marriage, changes in partnership behaviour (cohabitation, marriage, separation, divorce), the context of fertility, population ageing, mortality and life expectancy, migration into Europe, and the policy implications of recent demographic trends.

The course aims to familiarize students with key concepts, major debates, and recent research associated with the main population processes and trends in European countries and puts them in their socio-economic context. Students will also be introduced to methods and data sources used in the study of population and social demography. The aim of the course is to help students acquire a basic "literacy" of the leading ideas and research directions in the field of population studies. Demographic methods and measures are only covered to the extent necessary to understand substantive issues.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

Student knows and understands main population processes in Europe (fertility, ageing, mortality, migration etc.).

Student is able to properly analyze the causes and course of population processes, correctly interpret and explain them as well as formulate own opinions and hypotheses on this subject.

Student is able to supplement knowledge and skills about population processes in Europe on his own.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

Very good grade (5): student knows and understands population processes in Europe (fertility, ageing, mortality, migration etc.); is able to properly analyze all causes and course of population processes, correctly interpret and explain them as well as formulate own opinions and hypotheses on this subject.

Good grade (4): student knows and understands chosen population processes in Europe; is able to properly analyze chosen causes and course of population processes, correctly interpret and explain them as well as formulate own opinions and hypotheses on this subject.

Satisfactory grade (3): student knows and understands some of the population processes in Europe; is able to properly analyze some causes and course of population processes, correctly interpret and explain them as well as formulate own opinions and hypotheses on this subject.
