This course is dedicated to examination of the basic characteristics of the Christian notion of conscience in the context of moral theology. It deals with its historical development throughout the ages and contemporary debate on its function in our decision making. Apart from theoretical background, more practical study cases will be elaborated.

The course is devoted into careful examination of the Christian conscience in the field of moral theology. Therefore, conscience will be elaborated from the ethical perspective as a basic factor of our decision making.

Firstly, we will take a closer look at the historical development of concept of conscience, starting with the Bible and then examining major Christian thinkers (Thomas Aquinas, John Henry Newman) and theological trends (Probalisim, etc.).

Secondly, we contemporary moral theological views will be examined. We will analyze present Church teaching (Veritatis Splendor, Dignitatis Humanae) and nowadays’ theologians (like Joseph Ratzinger, Linda Hogan, Timothy O’Connell, etc.)

Lastly, we will discuss numerous study cases dealing with the practical problems of conscience, for instance in business or medical ethics.
