Short description:

Level: Basic – introductory.

Aims: The aim of the course is to present the long history of ancient Greece and its relations with the Bible (both Old and New Testament). It focuses on the relationship between Greek and Hellenistic culture and ancient Israel (both in Palestine and in Jewish diaspora) and the possible influence Hellenistic culture had on the Bible. The lecture depicts also a history of Jewish diaspora in Hellenistic world in different historical periods and important fruits of its activities, like the oldest translation of the Bible – the Septuagint.

1. Geography and topography of the Mediterranean region. Geography and topography of Greece.

2. Periodization of the history of ancient Greece. History of ancient Greece (I). The Beginnings and the Bronze Age.

3. History of Ancient Greece (II). "Dark Ages" and "Restoration" in the Eighth Century BC. History of Ancient Greece (III). Archaic Greece (700-480 BC).

4. History of Ancient Greece (IV). Sparta and Athens. Rivalry of city-states.

5. History of ancient Greece (V). Persian wars.

6. History of Ancient Greece (VI). Philip II of Macedon and Alexander the Great.

7. Hellenistic world. Ancient Alexandria. The history of Greek language.

8. Jews of the Hellenistic world.

9. Ancient Greece and the Bible – Old Testament. Greek Traces in the Hebrew Bible.

10. The Septuagint. Origins, character, interpretation.
