Level of course: basic Objectives of the course: Knowledge of classical theories of communication from various scientific fields. Interdisciplinary introduction to the studies of communication. Course description: The role of communication in the lives of individuals and society. Definitions, scope and extent of communication. The development of social communication processes from writing and print-based communications to new media. Theories and models of communication in different fields: sociology, psychology, semiotics, anthropology, cultural studies, etc. Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the concepts of sociology, psychology and cultural studies. |

Course contents: Basic concepts of the science of communication: sender, message, receiver, means of communication Levels and types of communication The typology of means of communication. The basic stages in the history of communication. Models of communication: Laswell, Schramm, Lewin, Lazarsfeld and Katz, Riley’s, Moles, Tudor. Communicative competence Sign and his definitions (de Saussure and Peirce) Connotation, denotation, and myth. The notion of code. Mass society - the genesis and characteristics. The concept and features of popular culture. Non-verbal and verbal communication. Definition of non-verbal communication. Functions of nonverbal communication and systems. The definition of language, a language code. Functions of language. Symbolic interactionism. E. Goffman's theatrical metaphor - basic concepts (space structure, roles and the side stage, the types of secrets, facade, masquerading) Orality and literacy by W. Ong - differentiating features. The concept of the media by M. McLuhan Features and functions of the stereotype. The spiral of silence. Agenda setting. The assumptions of functional analysis by R. Merton Types of effects of communication by J. Klapper and McQuail. The main principles of the use and benefits of the approach. Criteria for selection information. The typology of the functions of the media (according to Laswell, Wright, Lazarsfeld and Merton Violence in the media: catharsis hypothesis, habituation, suggestions, general excitement, rationalization, stimulation, social learning The concept of the doctrine of the media and its scope. Doctrines of media: authoritarian, liberal, Leninist, social responsibility, Catholic, democratic participation. Assessment methods: written exam |

At the level of knowledge a student should be able to describe the classical theories and models of communication in a variety of scientific fields, identify and compare the theoretical approaches to the study of communication, list and describe the essential features of the system and the process of social communication At the level of skills the student should be able to evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of the various theoretical concepts of communication, evaluate critically simplified models of communication. At the level of competence of the student is able to be aware of the importance and complexity of communication processes, make an sophisticated reflection on the course of communication in everyday life, use creatively of knowledge about communication in practice. |
