Short description:

The lecture aims to comprehensively introduce students to the methodology of the social-scientific approach to reading biblical texts and the practical application of this methodology to reading selected pericopes from the New Testament.

Full description:

1. Social-scientific approach to reading the Bible.

 

2. Honor and shame as central values ​​of the Mediterranean culture during the New Testament period.

2. History of research on the Mediterranean civilization in the aspect of honor and shame.

3. The basic interpretation model of honor and shame and its critical evaluation. Semantics of terminology determining honor and shame in the NT.

4-5 Honor inherited by Jesus from the perspective of Matthew's Gospel of Jesus Childhood (1 - 2).

6-7. Interpretation of the Eight Beatitudes (Matt 5, 3-12) in the perspective of honor and shame.

8. The concept of family honor in the Gospel according to Mark.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

The result of active participation in classes should be a comprehensive knowledge of anthropological and cultural methodology and its skilful application for independent reading of biblical texts.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The verification of learning outcomes will take place at two stages: 1) a written essay in which the student demonstrates the ability to apply anthroological and cultural methodology to interpret a selected text taken from the New Testament; 2) final oral exam on issues discussed in class.
