Preliminary Requirements:

General orientation in biblical, theological and historical issues.

Short description:

The aim of the lecture is to introduce students to the methodology of the anthropological and cultural approach to reading biblical texts and to apply this methodology to reading Mt 5:3-12 in practice.

Full description:

1. Anthropological and cultural approach and reading the Bible.

2. Honor and shame as the central values ​​of Mediterranean culture in the times of the New Testament.

2. The history of the study of the Mediterranean civilization in the aspect of honor and shame.

3. The basic interpretive model of honor and shame and its critical evaluation. The semantic scope of terminology for honor and shame in the NT.

4-5 History of the interpretation of the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5-7) and the Beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12).

6-8. Interpretation of the Beatitudes (Mt 5:3-12) in the perspective of honor and shame.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

The result of active participation in classes should be a comprehensive knowledge of anthropological and cultural methodology and its skilful application for independent reading of biblical texts.

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The verification of learning outcomes will take place at two stages: 1) a written essay in which the student demonstrates the ability to apply anthroological and cultural methodology to interpret a selected text taken from the New Testament; 2) final oral exam on issues discussed in class.
