level of course:

Year 1: Elementary

Year 2 and 3: Intermediate

objectives of the course:

Year 1: The students study Latin tenses, verb forms, Basic questions related to ancient culture with elements of ancient history and literature; the course also aims at gaining knowledge of Christian texts in Latin

Year 2 and 3: Students acquire basic knowledge of Latin; basic knowledge of classical culture with the elements of history and ancient literature; the study of Christian texts written in Latin, patristic and liturgical in nature.

prerequisites:

Year 1: No prerequisites

Year 2: Knowledge of basic Latin grammar (tenses, syntax and word formation) acquired in the course of the 1st year of study.

Year 3: Basic knowledge of Latin grammar (inflection, syntax, word building) acquired in previous 2 years of study.

course contents:

Year 1: The course focuses on the Latin tenses and verb forms, basic problems related to word formation, syntax, and style; it also involves reading, translation of texts listed below, ability to recognize grammatical forms in a text, learning Christian prayers in Latin

Year 2: The syntax and style of Latin, practice in translation of Latin texts.

Year 3: Historical, linguistic and theological analysis of selected texts listed in recommended reading.

assessment methods:

Year 1 and 2: Regular testing – 4 tests evaluating knowledge of the material studied in class, active participation, attendance. Winter semester – grades at the end of the semester, Summer semester – exam.

Year 3:

- Regular testing – 3 tests evaluating knowledge of the material studied in class, active participation, attendance. Winter semester – grades at the end of the semester, Summer semester – exam.

- Evaluated reading assignment – (10 psalms from Liturgia Horarum Ordo Misse)
