Short description:

Objectives: 1st Year: development of linguistic skills with regard to reading, writing, listening, speaking (to a small extent), ability to associate Latin words with those in Polish language (or in other languages known to students), which derive from Latin, acquisition of theological lexis.

2nd Year: Development of linguistic skills with special emphasis on reading comprehension, acquisition of theological lexis, identification of syntactic structures, development of dictionary skills, development of translation skills of new texts on intermediate level with the use of dictionary.

3rd Year: Correct reading of poetic and prosaic texts, acquisition of theological lexis, analysis, linguistic and factual explanation of translated texts.

Prerequisites: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Year: Knowledge of previously studied material.

Contents:

1st Year: Inflection and syntax, verbs of four conjugations in such forms as Indicativus praesentis passivi; imperativus praesentis passivi; indicativus imperfecti, futuri I activi and passivi. Verba deponentia. Coniunctivus praesentis activi and passivi. Nouns of 4th and 5th declensions, cardinal and ordinal numerals, double accusative. Nominativus cum infinitivo. Coniunctivus in main clauses (hortativus, iussivus, prohibitivus, optativus, dubitativus). Purpose and objective clauses, Texts: Bible quotations, phrases and maxims of later ages, adjusted to students’ level, easier fragments of Psalms

2nd Year: verbs of four conjugations in such forms as Coniunctivus perfecti and plusquamperfecti activi and passivi. Ablativus absolutus. Participium futuri passivi. Coniugatio periphrastica passiva. Gerundium. Coniunctivus in main clauses (potentialis and irrealis). Nominal and result clauses, Indirect questions, consecutio temporum, cum historicum, cum causale, and cum temporale clauses.

Texts: fragments of the Bible and of the writings of Church Fathers adjusted to students’ level.

3rd Year: systemization and consolidation of studied inflection and syntax, rules of Latin poetry with regard to reading liturgical hymns.

Texts: Selected psalms and hymns. Fragments of St. Augustine’s Confessiones. Missale Romanum (Ritus initiales. Liturgia verbi. Liturgia eucharistica. Prex eucharistica II. Ritus communionis. Ritus conclusionis).

Assessment methods:

1st, 2nd and 3rd Year – continuous evaluation, preparation for classes, attendance and participation in classes. monthly partial tests, End-of-term test. Final credit: average mark of continuous assessment and test
