Short description:

Type and level of the course: Obligatory course for the students of the second year of studies in seminary in Łomża. Elementary level.

Objectives of the course: To gain familiarity with the basic knowledge of meta-ethics: defining the material and formal subject of eth-ics; to present the main systems of thoughts including situational ethics; defining the notion of moral good and evil, requirements of a moral act, the question of conscience and law (moral norms); focusing on the classics of ethics and descriptions of moral experi-ences in classic literature; to assist in the education development and search for truth and goodness.

Prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the range of ethical language con-cerning the basic human good.

Understanding some specialist notions used in ethics, recognition of its topic, method, sources and the stages of its historic development and structure.

Contents of the course: The defining of ethics.; the object and goal of ethics; the method and division of ethics; ethics and other disciplines concerning morality; the main ethical trends in the history of ethics; the theological, deon-tological and personalistic substance of moral duty; the concept of the normative ethic; philosophical and theological explanations of morality; the person as an object and subject; the notion of moral good and evil; the moral act; the problem of conscience and law; Aretology; The Absolute as the last motive of morality.

Evaluation methods: Oral final examination during summer examination period. At the end of lectures students receive ques-tions to guide their preparation. During the exam a student receives one of the questions to be presented. The final mark is given for an oral presentation at the end of the winter semester concerning ethical litera-ture and the verification of knowledge in an oral exam, which draws on material and themes from both se-mesters. Exam duration – about twenty minutes.
