Level: Elementary.

Aims: Acquainting with the life, activities and teaching of the Church Fathers and early Christian writers.

Demand: Basic knowledge of philosophical and theological topics and history of the Church. Accomplished I year of theological studies.

SEMESTER I: Patristics and Fathers of the Church -the general characteristics, the division. The first symbols of faith. Didache and the Apostolic Fathers. Persecution -descriptions of martyrdom. Greek Apologists. Gnosis. Beginnings of the anti-heretic literature. The Alexandrian writers at the turn II and III century. The African writers at the end of the second and third century. The writers of Asia Minor, Syria and Palestine. The Rome writers in the third century. The beginnings of monasticism.

SEMESTER II: Disputes Arian: Arius and Athanasius of Alexandria. Cyril of Alexandria and other Egyptian writers in the era of litigation Arian. Cappadocian Fathers. Ephrem Syriac, Eusebius of Caesarea and Cyril of Jerusalem. John Chrysostom and other writers of Syria and Palestine in the fourth century. The writers of the history of The Church. The life and work of St. Ambrose. Chrysologus Peter and Leo the Great. Other writers in Italy on the council of Nicea. Hilary of Poitiers and writers in Galia. The life and work of St. Augustine. Writers in Africa and Spain in IV and V century. Gregory the Great, Boethius and Cassiodorus - the life and work. Isidore of Seville. John Damascene.

Oral exam in the winter and summer sessions. The student is responsible for two-three issues in the information provided earlier.
