Level: Basic – introductory.

Aims: The aim of the lecture is to present the long and complex history of Christianity in the Holy Land as seen through the archaeological finds, Christian sanctuaries and holy places. It will focus on the description of the material remains, biblical context and history of Christian places in the Holy Land.

2. History of Christianity in the Holy Land – I (From the beginnings to St Helena).

3. History of Christianity in the Holy Land – II (Byzantine period).

4. History of Christianity in the Holy Land – III (Islamic period and Crusaders period).

5. History of Christianity in the Holy Land – IV (Mamluk and Ottoman periods).

6. History of Christianity in the Holy Land – V (British Mandate, the State of Israel, modern history).

7. Custody of the Holy Land and its sanctuaries.

8. Antonio Barluzzi – the “architect of the Holy Land” – his life and works.

10. Christian remains, sanctuaries and holy places in Jerusalem – II

A short paper on either a chosen Christian sanctuary of the Holy Land or a scholarly review of one of the publications dealing with the problem of Christianity in the Holy Land.
