Metody i kryteria oceniania:

The course is divided into e-learning and interactive lectures. A student will familiarize him/herself with literature about unit #1-#10.

• Active participation in 80% of lectures is required.

• Completion of two essaysv (200 words) covering the literature in the pre-lecture part. Assigment after enrollment.

• During the interactive lecture, students will be divided into three groups and present solutions to assignments above.

• Presentation of an interesting paper of their own choosing pertaining to the scope of the lecture – 5 minutes oral presentationc including background, reason for selection, methodology, finding, strength and weakness of paper, conclusion, applicability of the findings.

• The test will be conducted at the beginning and end of the lectures series. 75% positive score is needed to qualify for a satisfactory grade on both exams.

a. „Classical” understanding of health and disease

b. „Alternative” definitions of health

2. Uniqueness of the critical care illness

a. Definition of critical care illness

b. Acute and chronic consequences of critical care illness

3. Homeostasis – the basic overview of the regulatory system of human body

4. Psycho-neuroimmunology

5. Stress

a. What are the sources of stress during CCI?

b. How to measure stress? (acute vs. chronic).

6. Adaptation to the CCI and its consequences

a. What are the „optimal” ways of coping with CCI?

b. Post-ICU syndrome.

7. Posttraumatic stress disorder, delirium, and disability as the consequences of CCI?

8. ICU design and its relationship to post-ICU stress reduction

9. Design of the healthcare delivery for the ICU patient

a. How is the healthcare delivered during acute illness?

b. How is the healthcare delivered during recovery from the ICU?

10. Lecture – medical aspect of critical care illness

11. Lecture – psychological aspect of critical care illness

12. Lecture – social aspect of critical care illness

13. Lecture – presentation of an assignment „How to change the ICU environment to reduce the stress and psychological consequences of critical care illness.”

14. Lecture – presentation of assignment „A design of the system to support survivors of CCI – how a patient, medical staff, and the insurance company can be motivated by a common goal.”

15. Lecture – presentation of assignment „When harm of the ICU admission exceeds benefits and how to convey this news to the patient?”

16. Paper presentation, final exam, feedback, and conclusion.
