Human scientific curiosity towards non human animals dates back to ancient times: vivisections took place in classic Greece and Aristotle can be fairly regarded as the first zoologist. Nonetheless systematic use of animals for research purposes is a fact of modern and contemporary science. Together with modern scientific uses of animals ethical concerns about such uses started to be raised into philosophical debates and public opinion. The class will reconstruct a short history of animal use in research and of the origins of the contemporary ethical debate. Different kinds of animal use in research will be presented and discussed with regard to the specific ethical problems they raise |

Ethical Issues of Biomedical Lab Research (3 hours) 4. Ethical issues of behavioral research in the wild and in the lab (3 hours) 5. Regulation of animal research, public opinion and democratic society(3 hours) |
