Skrócony opis:

The course introduces students to ecophysiology and ecosystem ecology of high latitude ecosystems, two research fields that deal with interactions between organisms and their environment. The course also gives the background for application of ecological knowledge in sustainable land management. The course will deepen the student’s knowledge on how environmental factors control and affect plant growth, ecosystem productivity and species richness in northern managed and natural terrestrial ecosystems. Also how plants and other terrestrial organisms modify their environment and take part in the nutrient-, carbon-, water- and energy cycles. Especial emphasis will be put on research on how climate change affects ecosystem function. Many examples will be taken from recent research on various natural and managed Icelandic ecosystems and other places close to the Arctic edge during the course.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

1. Obligatory attendance (1 unjustified absence is allowed) (10%)

2. Student reports of assignments given by the teacher (40%). Delayed delivery of each report decreases its grade by 5% (0.5) for each day that passes the set deadline.

3. Final Exam (50%) (100-90% very good, 80-70% good, 60-50% satisfactory, less than 50% insufficient).
