Skrócony opis:

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the most important issues and facts of Old Polish culture connected with the idea of "Sarmatism".

Pełny opis:

During our meetings we will discuss the problems of an Old Polish history and culture of Sarmatism. The issues of religious denominations, political institutions and cultural facts will be considered and put into discussion. From the very beginnig of Polish political/cultural history (10th century) to the times of Partition (1795) - we encounter complicated and very interesting history of a state which was one of the biggest countries in Europe of those years.

1. Poland and Christianity (why Rome?)

2. Polish Middle Ages - art and idees

3. Polish 15th century - how the state has been shaped

4. Institutions and Polish republicanism

5. Basic ideas of Polish political and cultural conduct

6. Renaissance art

7. Jan Kochanowski

8. Rhetoric of tolerancje

9. Rhetoric of a counter-reformation

10. Sarmatism - the Polish-Lithuanian state of mind

11. Wespazjan Kochowski's idea of the Commonwealth

12. Sarmatian "misjonizm"

The basic book is:

Norman Davies, God's Playground. A History of Poland, vol.1: The origins to 1795, Oxford UP 1981;

some literary materials will be offered by the Instructor
