Skrócony opis:

This course will explore the contemporary challenges of promoting democracy worldwide. It will first examine the spread of democracy in the late 20th century and the obstacles for further democratisation encountered in recent years. Theories of democratic transition and consolidation will be discussed and then applied to regions where undemocratic regimes are still common. The second party of course will explore the evolution and the relative contributions of US policy and the European Union in promoting democracy. The last part will look at the future of democratisation.

Pełny opis:

The course will develop the skills of analyzing the discourse on democracy and democracy promotion. At the end of the course the student should be able to engage in the discussion on democracy and transition to democracy. The core of seminar deals with different stages of democratization and variety of external actors involved in the regime changes. The students will enhance their knowledge of the mechanisms of democratization and especially the politics of promoting democracy in third countries. Analyzing the policies of democracy promotion pursued by main actors student will get an idea of the relations of the foreign policy interests of analyzed donors.

KNOWLEDGE

K_W01 Has an extended knowledge about the rules of democratic regimes and can distinguish differences between the processes of democratic transition and democratic consolidation.

K_W06 Has a thorough knowledge of the external factors of democratization and democratization processes in comparative perspective as well as other political organizations and institutions functioning in democratic state.

SKILLS

K_U01 Has the skill in critical observation and interpretation of social and political phenomena of different kind as well as in recognition of their relationship.

K_U04 Can indicate and explain rules and values of the democratic state as well as civil society; can assess critically the cultural achievements of human being with particular emphasis on the political culture

K_U05 Can use basic theoretical approaches and use methods and techniques in order to diagnose and predict different political phenomena; can by him/herself formulate research hypotheses

SOCIAL COMPETENCES

K_K01Is ready to participate actively in the political life, also in teams that accomplish social, political and civic goals.

Metody i kryteria oceniania:

Students are expected to read the literature for each class and take active participation in the discussion.

The seminar finishes with a final written exam held in English

There two absences possible duing the semster.
