Level: Basic – introductory. Aims: The aim of the course is to present the long history of ancient Egypt and its relations with the Bible. It focuses on the relationship between Egypt and ancient Israel and the possible influence Egypt had on the Bible, also from a cultural point of view. It depicts Egypt in the Bible and history of Jewish diaspora in Egypt in different historical periods. Preliminary requirements: - |

The merits: 1. Geography and topography of Egypt. Periodization of ancient Egyptian history. 2. History of ancient Egypt. Prehistorical and archaic periods. Old Kingdom. First Intermediate Period. 3. History of ancient Egypt (II). Middle Kingdom. Second Intermediate Period/ Hyksos. 4. History of ancient Egypt (III). New Kingdom. Third Intermediate Period. 5.History of ancient Egypt (IV). Egypt under the Persian rule. Egypt in Hellenistic and Roman periods. 6. Egypt in the Bible. Geography of Egypt according to the Biblical texts. 7. Egypt in the Bible (II). View of Egypt and its institutions in different biblical texts. 8. First contacts between Israel and Egypt: from legend to history. 9. Palestine under the Egyptian rule in the New Kongdom period. 10. Moses and History of the Exodus (from Egypt). 11. From David to Jeremiah: relations between Egypt and Israel in the monarchic (united and divided) periods. Egypt as place of refuge during the Babilonian exile period. History of Jewish diaspora in Egypt in the Persian period. 12. Religion of ancient Egypt. Literature of ancient Egypt. 13.
