Level: Basic – introductory. Aims: The aim of the lecture is to present geography, topography and long history of Syro-Palestine, as well as centuries-old relationships of its inhabitants with biblical Israel. Among the most important closest neighbours of Israel we will discuss: Canaanites, Amorites, Arameans, Philistines, Phoenicians, Ammonites, Moabites, Edomites, Nabateans. The merits: The lectures will focus on geography and topography of Syro-Palestine and will provide an introduction to the very complex history of this region, from ancient times to the present day. It will cover the history of both its Israeli and non-Israeli inhabitants in antiquity. It will discuss the topic in 4 dimentions: 1) Geographical/historical one (for each of the neighbouring countries) 2) How the Bible presents a particular neighbouring nation 3) What do we know about a particular culture (and the possible influence of it on the Bible) 4) Jewish diasporas in those neighbouring regions. |
