Level: Basic – introductory. Aims: The aim of the course is to present the long history of ancient Mesopotamia and its relations with the Bible. It focuses on the relationship between Mesopotamian cultures (Assyrian, Babylonian) and ancient Israel and the possible influence Mesopotamia had on the Bible, also from a cultural point of view (even Sumerian and Akkadian mythology). The lecture depicts the Mesopotamian cultures in the Bible and history of Jewish diaspora in Mesopotamia in different historical periods. Preliminary requirements: - |

The merits: 1. Geography and topography of Mesopotamia. 2. Periodization of ancient history of the region. 3. History of ancient Mesopotamia. Prehistorical and proto-historic periods. The beginnings of the Sumerian culture. 4. Sumerians. 5. Akkadians. 6. The history of Mesopotamia after 2004 BC – Assyria and Babylonia. 7. The history of Mesopotamia under the Persians. Hellenistic and other periods. 8. Mesopotamia in the Bible. First contacts between Israel and Mesopotamian cultures: from legend to history. The story of Abraham. 9. Mesopotamia in the Bible (II). View of Assyria and Babylonia and their institutions in different biblical texts. 10. Palestine under the rule of Mesopotamian empires. Israel in Assyria (Assyrian deportations). 11. Palestine under the rule of Mesopotamian empires. Israel in Babylon (Babylonian deportations) 12. “By the rivers of Babylon” – the Exile: from theology to history or from history to theology? 13.
