The course delves into the foundations of the prevalent legal and ethical approaches to the issue of self-defence and war. Various answers will be discusses to questions like: (Why) is self-defence permissible? What type of rationale legitimizes the use of force against a political community? To what extent are individual citizens responsible for the aggressive policy of (morally deplorable use of force by) their state leaders? What level of collateral damage (killing civilians) is acceptable during war? Is pacifism an adequate solution to international conflicts? |
