The aim of the course is:

1) to acquaint students with the complexities of animal behaviour

2) to explain how animal behaviour affect the ability of survival of the animals

3) to show the possibilities of using knowledge about animal behaviour in nature conservation

During the classes students will observe the behaviour of selected invertebrate species

Undoubtedly, the course on animal behaviour will inspire students to have a humanitarian approach to animals.

Key: animal, behaviour, survival

Brief description

Progress in medicine and biotechnology in 20th century made deep interference in the human life, especially at critical moments; further research show that influence on the evolution of humans will be possible.

This is reason of some question about possible borders of medical research and procedures. These questions and answers which are given by different thinkers are the subject of the lecture.

In the first part of the lecture some basic philosophical controversies are mentioned; the thesis given are the fundament of resolution of specific issues. In the second part exemplary solution of some question is showed as a model answer the present and future question.

Brief description

The course introduce methods of study bird ecology and behavior. It focuses mainly on breeding season of birds. Students will be acquainted with several techniques that can be useful in the field and help to manage conservation projects. They will be acquainted with the ethical and legal aspects of working with birds in the field; with the risks associated with field work and the safety principles. At the end we will focus on some examples of the bird conservation management as well as the habitat management. A case study for the Middle Vistula River will be presented.

During exercises two field excursions along the Vistula River are planned (near Łomna and in Warsaw) to compare bird species diversity between country and urban landscapes.

Brief description

The man (as well as other organisms) lives in an environment and this environment exerts certain effects on the body. All biological systems must self-regulate in the context of changing environmental demands. At the simplest level of agreement, “stress” involves some environmental stimulus that produces a reaction in a living organism that may be either favorable or unfavorable to the organism. The term, “stress”, should be understand both as an environmental stimulus and as the response to an environmental stimulus. Physiological disruption resulting from impoverished environmental circumstances is central to the study of health, lifestyle and social status. Use of multiple indicators gives a comprehensive understanding of stress and adaptation in the past and contemporary.

Brief description

The aim of the course is to turn the students attention to the soil as a complex habitat of high biological diversity, which supports the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. The course provides information about the major groups of organisms that live in the soil and their role in the natural and managed ecosystems. A strong emphasis is put on the factors influencing soil biodiversity and the services provided by soil biodiversity. The course offers also some training in sampling and assessing the density and diversity of some soil animal groups and using them as soil biological quality indices.
