Short description:

The objective of the course is to broaden and cmplement knowledge concerning cognitive psychology that is being taught during lectures on this subject. During the classes it is planned to present the major empirical works leading to the formulation and verification of leading theories of this discipline of psychology. Main techniques and tools used by cognitive psychologists are going to be presented.

Program content

1. The philosophical context of research conducted by cognitive psychologists. Turing test. John Searle's "Chinese Room" argument.

2. Techniques of scaling in psychophysics.

3. Perceptual illusions.Cross-cultural differences in picture perception (J. Deręgowski's research). Depth perception in pictures.

4. E. Gibson studies on perceptual development. Pattern recognition theories - Michael Posner's research (prototype approach). Mental rotation.

5. Methods of studying attention (D2 Test, Mackworth Clock test, Continous Performance Test).

6. Controlled and automatic processing - Schneider and Shiffrin studies.

7. Psycholinguistics and its research methods. Semantic differential. Cloze test.

8. Research on problem solving - verbal protocols analysis.

9. Lewicki's research on concepts learning. Models of semantic networks. The effect of typicallity (E. Rosch). Tversky's research on the relation of similarity.

10. Classic research on memory and learning. Learning curves.

11. Experimental procedure of memory research - main phases.

12. Sensory memory - backward masking procedure. Sperling research using partial reports.

13. Methods of short-term memory span assessment. Suffix effect.

14. Assossment of executive function and working memory capacity.

15. Memory tests batteries in clinical practice.

16. Summary and credit of the classes.
