Short description: |
Lectures on the history of ancient philosophy this semester are a continuation of the lectures from the previous semester. They are intended to show, based on the available texts and testimonies of philosophical literature, the most important philosophical ideas developed by Greek philosophers, as well as how these ideas were born, functioned and what they were in the life of the philosophers themselves and in ancient culture in general. The basis is the reading of source texts, in this semester, apart from "Lives and Views of Famous Philosophers" by Diogenes Laertius, also selected works of Plato, Aristotle, some of the Stoics, Epicurus, Cicero. |

Subject matter of the course: Plato: an existential aspect of Plato's philosophy, Orphic legacy in the philosophy of Plato, Platonic mysticism, Plato's theory of the idea, Platonic idealism, Platonic inspirations in the Christian philosophy and spirituality. Aristotle: logics, metaphysics, cosmology and psychology, epistemology, ethics, political philosophy. Hellenistic philosophy - civilization, cultural and moral transformation in Greece, Hellenistic philosophical schools and their role in the cultural and moral transformation; common features of Hellenistic philosophy; philosophy as a moral and intellectual formation. Other aspects of the spiritual culture of the Hellenistic era (renaissance of Greek mysteries, the influx of eastern mysteries). Pyrrho of Elida and skepticism: Pyrrho's guiding features of skepticism; skepticism of the Platonic Academy. Zeno of Kition and stoicism; ethical and practical dimension of the philosophy of stoicism, stoic philosophy of the Logos and natural law; stoic ethics and the most important stoic moral ideals. Epicurus and his philosophical mission, Epicurean atomism as the prospect of seeing and solving all physical, ontological and moral problems. Philosophical schools in the period of the Roman Empire: Cynicism, Stoicism, Pythagoreism, middle Platonism, Gnosticism, Hermeticism, "Chaldean Oracles". Neo-Platonism, the common features of the philosophy of this period. |

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS: |
Classes are continuation of history of ancient philosophy, lectured in the last semester. Objectives are the same but they are implemented by other historical material. Basic aim of history of ancient philosophy study in 2nd semester is to acquire thorough knowledge from the philosophical culture of ancient Greece, from Plato till late Antiquity, and also skill of recognizing the main problems and philosophical motives typical for discussed period. No less important is the fact, that student, thanks to that clasObjective learning outcomes adapted to philosophical literature FK1_W04 Zna wybrane zagadnienia kontekstu historycznego i kulturowego fenomenów literackich w okresie starożytnym. Rozumie znaczenie kontekstu kulturowego i historycznego w dziejach i recepcji literatury. FK1_U05 Potrafi wykorzystać w pracy znajomość kontekstu kulturowego, teorii recepcji, nauk pomocniczych. FK1_K01: Zdaje sobie sprawę z ograniczeń i niepełności posiadanej wiedzy, konieczności jej stałego pogłębiania; zdaje sobie sprawę ze stałej ewolucji tak nauk o literaturze jak i wiedzy o literaturze okresu starożytnego. |
Assessment methods and assessment criteria: |
Course in a form of lecture. Within the bounds of possibility lectures are interactive and students are requested to actively participate. Partially it could assume the form of seminar- particular when it comes to easier topics, for instance as students' presentations, with audiovisual equipment or materials available on the Internet. Before the exam there will be held the general revision of the most relevant topics required for the exam. The effects of the education are verified mainly by the oral exam. In the same manner the appreciable influence for the final grade has students' commitment, included their attendance at lectures, presentations and participation in discussions. Students who attended every lecture, could complete also a written homework on the topic agreed with the lecturer. Lecturer could release from the exam students with very good grade.
