Brief description

(in Polish) Wykład dotyczy najważniejszych zjawisk w sztuce Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego, przede wszystkim w okresie nowożytnym. Zostaną one przedstawione na szerokim tle historycznym i kulturowym. Podczas zajęć zostanie także omówiona terminologia specjalistyczna z historii sztuki w języku angielskim.

Brief description

The course covers issues relating to Jewish art. The fundamental question it poses is - does Jewish art exist? If it exists, in what form, what content does it contain, and what motifs does it use to express it? What is Jewish national art of the 19th and first half of the 20th century? What content does it contain, and what motifs does it use to express it? The art of Jewish artists in the face of the Holocaust. The course covers, artistic phenomena (main iconographic and stylistic motifs) in the work of selected European artists with Jewish roots, which answer these questions in the most representative way.

Classes include: during a class students are required to read and analyze short texts in English with the lecturer (questions - answers, quizzes), lectures illustrated by presentations, and short films.

The lectures concern the iconography of Jewish religious art based on examples from Poland, Europe, and Israel. Scopes: origins of art, literature, databases, terminology, sources of iconography, Hebrew language and selected religious writings, iconography in the historical and cultural context - the Temple of Jerusalem as a reference point for the synagogue, plant and animal symbolism, meaning of Zodiac – as decoration for synagogues, utensils and matzevot.

Classes include a lecture illustrated with a presentation and film material. Students are required to read a text indicated by the teacher a week before the class. And answer the question concerning it.

Brief description

The lectures concern the activities of the most important centres of Jewish art in Poland and Palestine at the turn of the 20th century and in the first half of the 20th century. The scope of the classes includes the artistic circles of Warsaw, Łódź and the circle connected with the School of Fine Arts "Bezalel" in Jerusalem. On the basis of the activity of these circles and the work of selected artists, trends - specific to Jewish art of the period - are discussed, manifested in the iconographic and formal layer of works - in the context of European and world art.

Classes include a lecture illustrated with a presentation and video footage. They comprise 15 hours - 7.5 online meetings. Students are required to read the indicated text (in the previous class) and answer 2 questions about it - orally or in writing - at the beginning of the lecture. All texts can be found in the MTeams.
