Courses in registration (in Polish) Rejestracja na semestr letni 2019/20 – Instytut Ekologii i Bioetyki WF-OB-2019/20_L

The subject introduces the term - active protection of the species, presents ways of planning such a form of protection, and presents potential sources of funding. It presents the use of various methods in the field to actively protect animals on the example of colonial bird species, nesting on the Vistula islands. Shows the effectiveness of different techniques depending on the species and the type of threat. It teaches methods that may be useful for protecting species and habitats. The subject demonstrates the ethical and legal aspects of working with animals in the field; shows the hazards associated with a fieldwork and safety practices

At the turn of May and June (depending on the advancement of the breeding season, and the water level) a week-long trip in the area to the University Field Station in Wróble near Maciejowice (the island on the MiddleVistula River). There are 1-2 organizational meetings before the trip

The course allows to get acquainted with contemporary problems regarding the man and the environment, showing the glows and shadows of civilization development, including the anthropogenic impact on biodiversity. It acquainted with the characteristic fauna of selected urban and rural environments. The course teaches the various forms of communication and information exchanging.

(in Polish) Biochemia nauka badająca przemiany chemiczne i energetyczne procesów życiowych przebiegających w żywej komórce i mające znaczenie dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania wszystkich organizmów żywych. Zajmuje się nie tylko badaniem mechanizmu reakcji chemicznych zachodzących w komórce, ale także sposobami gromadzenia, magazynowani i użytkowania energii w procesach jej wymagających.

Zostaną omówione wszystkie substancje niezbędne do prawidłowego funkcjonowania organizmu np. białka czy kwasy nukleinowe. Omówiona zostanie funkcja i znaczenie różnych cząsteczek w przemianach biochemicznych mających zapewnić prawidłowe funkcjonowanie organizmu oraz przedstawione zostaną przykładowe, najistotniejsze szlaki metaboliczne z uwzględnieniem ich umiejscowienia w komórce.

Progress in medicine and biotechnology in 20th century made deep interference in the human life, especially at critical moments; further research show that influence on the evolution of humans will be possible.

This is reason of some question about possible borders of medical research and procedures. These questions and answers which are given by different thinkers are the subject of the lecture.

In the first part of the lecture some basic philosophical controversies are mentioned; the thesis given are the fundament of resolution of specific issues. In the second part exemplary solution of some question is showed as a model answer the present and future question

(in Polish) Różnorodność gatunkowa i obfitość występowania organizmów glebowych jest tak duża, że często jest porównywana z biologicznym bogactwem lasów tropikalnych. Ze środowiskiem glebowym, w różnym stopniu powiązani są przedstawiciele wszystkich królestw świata żywego, od grzybów i bakterii począwszy a na roślinach i zwierzętach kończąc. Wielokierunkowe, wzajemne powiązania organizmów, oraz ich udział w przemianach martwej materii organicznej warunkują prawidłowe funkcjonowanie ekosystemów lądowych. Celem wykładu jest zapoznanie studiujących z całym bogactwem życia gleby ze szczególnym wskazaniem na rolę organizmów w procesach mineralizacji i humifikacji.

(in Polish) Student pozna zasady prowadzenia biomonitoringu w szczególności monitoringu stanu środowiska glebowego w różnych siedliskach (zaburzonych i naturalnych) na podstawie fauny glebowej.

W trakcie zajęć omówiona zostanie rola organizmów glebowych w przebiegu procesów glebotwórczych, w utrzymaniu żyzności gleby, w zachowaniu równowagi ekologicznej w glebie.

Omówione zostaną przyczyny degradacji środowiska oraz możliwości wykorzystania żywych organizmów do oceny stanu i/lub stopnia zanieczyszczenia gleby, wody i powietrza.

The course acquaints students with the possibilities of using microbiological and biotechnological tools in the assessment of the state of the environment, in monitoring the quality of soil, water and air, and in bioremediation.

The course introduce methods of study bird ecology and behavior. It focuses mainly on breeding season of birds. Students will be acquainted with several techniques that can be useful in the field and help to manage conservation projects. They will be acquainted with the ethical and legal aspects of working with birds in the field; with the risks associated with field work and the safety principles. At the end we will focus on some examples of the bird conservation management as well as the habitat management. A case study for the Middle Vistula River will be presented.

During exercises two field excursions along the Vistula River are planned (near Łomna and in Warsaw) to compare bird species diversity between country and urban landscapes.

Environmental considerations have an important impact on the emergence of our species. Over time, Homo sapiens began to influence the environment throughout "cultural products". While today's culture enables us to function in a variety of environments, our biological equipment is still "sensitive" to environmental change.

System of SI units - basic units, related and complementary units - unit conversion. Describing the formulas of elements, chemical compounds, naming of inorganic and organic chemical compounds. Arrangement of equations of chemical reactions, selection of stoichiometric coefficients. Basic chemical laws. Mol, molar mass, molar volume of gases. Stoichiometric calculations based on the course of the reaction.

Methods for expressing the concentration of solutions: percentage, molar, fractions: molar, volume, mass. Conversion of concentrations. Preparation of solutions with the desired concentration. Dilution and mixing of solutions. Reactions in solutions. Ionic equilibria in solutions: dissociation - constant and degree of dissociation, strong and weak electrolytes. Hydrolysis, ion product of water, pH of solutions. Buffer solutions - calculations. Solubility. Solubility product, precipitation precipitation.

(in Polish) Cele przedmiotu: Zajęcia mają ukazać studentowi mechanizmy edukacyjne w wymiarze praktycznym. Zajęcia te mają na celu wykształcenie wśród studentów umiejętności propagowania problematyki ochrony środowiska.

Aim of the lecture is to present the complex system of primates ecology and the important role of man in the protection of these animals. Thanks to theoretical and practical activities students have the possibility of contact with animals. Students will know the functioning and purpose of Zoo.

Since the middle of the last century, there has been a growing interest in the international community to protect the environment well beyond the national level. It is noted that environmental problems cannot be effectively addressed by countries at the level of national initiatives. International and even global cooperation is necessary in this regard. This is due to the fact that economic actions taken in the territory of one states may have negative consequences in the territory of other.

International cooperation increases in dimension as the transnational nature of env. problems develops.

Among the primary ones is climate change, which has different relationships to other problems.

The key issues :

- general principles of EL

- selected areas of regulations: climate change, nature protection, EIA

assessments, protection against pollution, air protection, water

protection and water management

- liability in EL.

Cele przedmiotu: Krytyczne zapoznanie z problematyką etyki środowiskowej i jej głównymi nurtami.

Efekty kształcenia:

Postawa - Ujmowanie postępowania własnego i innych osób wobec środowiska przyrodniczego w kategoriach moralnych.

Kompetencja - Znajomość zagadnień etyki środowiskowej i wypracowanie zdolności ujmowania problemów ekologicznych w kategoriach moralnych.

(in Polish) Celem przedmiotu jest zdobycie wiedzy na temat właściwości fizykochemicznych gleby, procesów i przemian zachodzących z udziałem mikroorganizmów i ich znaczenia dla żyzności gleb. Student zapozna się z wybranym fizycznymi, chemicznymi i mikrobiologicznymi metodami analizy próbek glebowych stosowanymi w ocenie stanu i jakości środowiska glebowego.
