This course introduces the students to how microbiological and biotechnological tools can be applied in the field of environmental protection and environmental sustainability, mainly in assessing the state of the environment, in monitoring of soil, water and air quality, and in bioremediation.

This course demonstrates a huge diversity of microorganisms and their roles in natural processes occurring in soils, water and air. Students will learn how microorganisms contribute to environmental quality. The course will get students theoretical knowledge and also practical skills, how to perform microbial analysis of soil, water and air. The students will learn the basic methods and techniques for detection and quantification of microorganisms in different habitats and microbial activity.

Content:

1. Application of microbiological processes and biotechnology in environmental protection - an introduction.

2. Diversity of microorganisms - viruses, bacteria, actinomycetes, fungi.

3. Microbiology of soil, water and air.

4. Enrichment, isolation and counting of microorganisms in different habitats.

5. Effect of microorganisms on nutrient cycling - nitrogen transformation.

6. Activities of microbial enzymes.

7.Utlilization of microorganisms as biological control agents.

8. Final test.

- Obligatory attendance - are allowed only one absences

- Two colloquia during the course (each test consists of 5 short questions, Correct answer - 1 point)

4 pt.- 4,

3 pt. – 3,

2 pt. and less - 2.

- Reports of practical exercises

- Final test (consisting of 30 test questions)- only students with all accepted exercise reports will be admitted to the final test

- the final assessment of the exercise is the arithmetic mean of the positive assessment of the final test and assessments of three colloquia during the course
