Short description:

The main aim of the classes is a reflection on the socio-cultural dimensions of the Internet. During the course, students will be familiarized with the main theories and research methods of a digital phenomena and forms of online activity.

Full description:

The main aim of the classes is a reflection on the socio-cultural dimensions of the Internet. During the course, students will be familiarized with the main theories and research methods of a digital phenomena and forms of online activities. We will discuss: styles of using the Internet, its social dimensions, the most popular websites and platforms, the opportunities it offers, as well as the risks associated with it. Participation in the virtual world is an increasingly important element of the everyday life of each of us, therefore it should be treated with a reflective, critical insight in order not to miss the opportunities it opens up for both participants of socio-cultural life and its researchers, as well as avoid - or at least be aware - of threats.

Efekty kształcenia i opis ECTS:

H2A_W03 - is familiarized with the basic theories and concepts in the field of new media and digital culture theory.

H2A_U02 - can analyze digital phenomena and forms of online activities according to applicable theoretical and methodological approaches.

H2A_K04 - is aware of the responsibility and ethical dimencions of participation in digital communication spheres and other forms of Internet activities.

ECTS:

- participation in classes = 30h

- reading the literature = 25h

- working on a presentation = 30h

- conducting a nethnographic research = 50h

- preparing a study report = 20h

In total: 155/25 = 6 ECTS

Assessment methods and assessment criteria:

The final mark is based on continuous assessment (30%) and the level of prepared research reports in the field of virtual ethnography (70%). Two absences are allowed.

To be assessed as 5 student:

- is very well familiarized with the basic theories and concepts in the field of new media and digital culture theory.

- can profounly and convincingly analyze digital phenomena and forms of online activities according to applicable theoretical and methodological approaches.

- is fully aware of the responsibility and ethical dimencions of participation in digital communication spheres and other forms of Internet activities.

To be assessed as 4 student:

- is enough familiarized with the basic theories and concepts in the field of new media and digital culture theory.

- can analyze digital phenomena and forms of online activities according to applicable theoretical and methodological approaches on an intermediate level.

- is adequately aware of the responsibility and ethical dimencions of participation in digital communication spheres and other forms of Internet activities.

To be assessed as 3 student:

- is familiarized with the basic theories and concepts in the field of new media and digital culture theory on a basic level.

- can analyze digital phenomena and forms of online activities according to applicable theoretical and methodological approaches on a basic level.

- is preliminarily aware of the responsibility and ethical dimencions of participation in digital communication spheres and other forms of Internet activities.
