The course allows to get acquainted with contemporary problems regarding the man and the environment, showing the glows and shadows of civilization development, including the anthropogenic impact on biodiversity. It acquainted with the characteristic fauna of selected urban and rural environments. The course teaches the various forms of communication and information exchanging.

(in Polish) Biochemia nauka badająca przemiany chemiczne i energetyczne procesów życiowych przebiegających w żywej komórce i mające znaczenie dla prawidłowego funkcjonowania wszystkich organizmów żywych. Zajmuje się nie tylko badaniem mechanizmu reakcji chemicznych zachodzących w komórce, ale także sposobami gromadzenia, magazynowani i użytkowania energii w procesach jej wymagających.

Zostaną omówione wszystkie substancje niezbędne do prawidłowego funkcjonowania organizmu np. białka czy kwasy nukleinowe. Omówiona zostanie funkcja i znaczenie różnych cząsteczek w przemianach biochemicznych mających zapewnić prawidłowe funkcjonowanie organizmu oraz przedstawione zostaną przykładowe, najistotniejsze szlaki metaboliczne z uwzględnieniem ich umiejscowienia w komórce.

Progress in medicine and biotechnology in 20th century made deep interference in the human life, especially at critical moments; further research show that influence on the evolution of humans will be possible.

This is reason of some question about possible borders of medical research and procedures. These questions and answers which are given by different thinkers are the subject of the lecture.

In the first part of the lecture some basic philosophical controversies are mentioned; the thesis given are the fundament of resolution of specific issues. In the second part exemplary solution of some question is showed as a model answer the present and future question

The aim of the lecture is to familiarize students with basic knowledge about the biology of modern and prehistoric human populations. This includes issues related to assessing the health status of former human populations on the basis of skeletal stressors of the environment, acquiring techniques for assessing sex and age based on the characteristics of the skeleton. The processes of adaptation and adaptability and adaptation in man (genetic adaptation, climate and adaptation, biocultural adaptation factors) are discussed.

The basic concepts and mechanisms determining the variability of man are approximated. Basic concepts related to the process of human microevolution are discussed. Basic information on the field of biodiversity, epidemiology and evolution of human diseases is also provided.

The course acquaints students with the possibilities of using microbiological and biotechnological tools in the assessment of the state of the environment, in monitoring the quality of soil, water and air, and in bioremediation.

The course introduce methods of study bird ecology and behavior. It focuses mainly on breeding season of birds. Students will be acquainted with several techniques that can be useful in the field and help to manage conservation projects. They will be acquainted with the ethical and legal aspects of working with birds in the field; with the risks associated with field work and the safety principles. At the end we will focus on some examples of the bird conservation management as well as the habitat management. A case study for the Middle Vistula River will be presented.

During exercises two field excursions along the Vistula River are planned (near Łomna and in Warsaw) to compare bird species diversity between country and urban landscapes.

The course presents selected important issues that are part of CSR, mainly CSR reporting, CSR concepts, and standards (ISO 20121, ISO 26000, AA 100). Students will also learn about the connection of CSR with environmental protection (AGENDA 2030, Dow Jones Sustainability Index), cause-related marketing, and the role of stakeholders in shaping CSR policy in an organization.

• Monographic lecture - 30 hours

The subject introduces the term - active protection of the species, presents ways of planning such a form of protection, and presents potential sources of funding. It presents the use of various methods in the field to actively protect animals on the example of colonial bird species, nesting on the Vistula islands. Shows the effectiveness of different techniques depending on the species and the type of threat. It teaches methods that may be useful for protecting species and habitats. The subject demonstrates the ethical and legal aspects of working with animals in the field; shows the hazards associated with a fieldwork and safety practices

At the turn of May and June (depending on the advancement of the breeding season, and the water level) a week-long trip in the area to the Institute of Biological Sciences UKSW Field Station in Wróble near Maciejowice (the island on the MiddleVistula River). There are 1-2 organizational meetings before the trip

System of SI units - basic units, related and complementary units - unit conversion. Describing the formulas of elements, chemical compounds, naming of inorganic and organic chemical compounds. Arrangement of equations of chemical reactions, selection of stoichiometric coefficients. Basic chemical laws. Mol, molar mass, molar volume of gases. Stoichiometric calculations based on the course of the reaction.

Methods for expressing the concentration of solutions: percentage, molar, fractions: molar, volume, mass. Conversion of concentrations. Preparation of solutions with the desired concentration. Dilution and mixing of solutions. Reactions in solutions. Ionic equilibria in solutions: dissociation - constant and degree of dissociation, strong and weak electrolytes. Hydrolysis, ion product of water, pH of solutions. Buffer solutions - calculations. Solubility. Solubility product, precipitation precipitation.

Student zapozna się z wybranym fizycznymi, chemicznymi i mikrobiologicznymi metodami analizy próbek glebowych stosowanymi w ocenie stanu i jakości środowiska glebowego.

(in Polish) Wykład obejmuje problematykę z zakresu badań izotopowych. Badania trwałych izotopów stanowią narzędzie badawcze coraz częściej wykorzystywane w różnych dziedzinach. Wykład ma na celu zapoznanie słuchaczy z metodyką analiz izotopowych, zaprezentowanie szerokiego wachlarza aplikacji technik izotopowych w różnych obszarach badawczych, w szczególności w badaniach środowiskowych i ekologii człowieka. Wprowadzone zostaną również pojęcie tafonomii i diagenezy, omówione zostaną metody oceny zmian diagenetycznych w materiale szkieletowym.

Wykład zawiera szczegółową charakterystykę izotopów węgla, azotu, tlenu i strontu.

The seminar is devoted to master's theses which deal with the interaction of nature and culture. Preference are given to topics that deal with issues related to the influence of religion on human relationships to nature. The seminar also features diploma theses that focus on issues such as the principle of sustainable development, the Millennium Goals, the of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the impact of particular animal and plant species on the human civilization.

The aim of the seminar is to teach the student to apply the principles of methodology of scientific writing and to elaborate the subject matter of the thesis.

The lecture introduces basic achievements of molecular ecology. It presents methods of collecting and storing samples for molecular studies. It presents the most important molecular markers and their application in ecological and nature protection studies

The scope of the course includes the following: (a) solidification of knowledge in the anatomy of the human skeleton, (b) concept of adimation, adaptability, adaptation, (c) methods of assessing sex and age on the basis of bones, (d) metric and nonmetric traits and its role in the study of ancient human populations (e) skeletal determinants of environmental stress, selected skeletal pathologies, and the importance of these traits for the analyss of the health status of human groups, (f) selected issues in epidemiology, demography, biodemiology, biocultural adaptation, the evolution of selected diseases.

Główny nacisk merytoryczny, położony jest na konsultacje w zakresie rozumienia procesów środowiskowych mających wpływ na ocenę i waloryzację stanu środowiska. Wiedza ta powinna, pomóc absolwentom w podejmowaniu decyzji w zakresie prawidłowego procesu zarządzania środowiskiem przyrodniczym z uwzględnieniem zasad zrównoważonego rozwoju.

Omówione zostaną kwestie zarówno ram prawnych, determinacji prawa na szczeblu krajowym przez prawodawstwo unijne, charakterystyka poszczególnych odnawialnych źródeł energii w świetle ustawy o odnawialnych źródłach energii, a także najważniejszych mechanizmów prawnych w dziedzinie OZE.

In the event of an ecological crisis, in the problem area of environmental protection, the issues of human-environment relations come to the fore. These relations are closely related to the interaction of man with the environment. Human impact (targeted action) on the environment shifts the focus to the area related to the broadly understood decision-making process. The decision-making process takes place in a specific context that can be placed within the life cycle.

(in Polish) W ramach wykładu przekazywana jest wiedza z grupy przedmiotów Nauk o Ziemi (Meteorologia z Klimatologią) (wg. OECD) z uwzględnieniem ich mechanizmów i wzajemnych powiązań przyczynowo-skutkowych. Studenci uczą się analizować zjawiska klimatyczne z uwzględnieniem podejścia holistycznego. Główny nacisk merytoryczny, położony jest na studia w zakresie rozumienia procesów klimatycznych, zachodzących w otaczającym środowisku.

As part of the course, students will prepare selected letters that occur in administrative proceedings involving environmental issues.

Over the last three decades, an ever-increasing commitment to conservation by all the major religious traditions has been noted. This commitment has resulted in a significant increase in the number of pronouncements by religious leaders on the conservation of nature, accompanied by the growing number of religion-based environmental organizations and their active participation in specific environmental actions. This has led to a greater awareness among politicians, scientists and representatives of various international organizations of the role that religions can play in overcoming the ecological crisis. The State of the World Report of 2003 points :

1) capacity to shape cosmologies (worldviews),

2) moral authority,

3) a large base of adherents,

4) significant material resources,

5) community-building capacity.

The main goal of the course is to show connection between religious traditions and environment.

The subject of the course is to prepare for the presentation of the problem/issue in the public forum, discussion. The subject helps to prepare a bachelor's degree paper in biogeography (e.g., the causes of contemporary distribution of species, their present status, threats or means of protection and/or increase in abundance, the impact of invasions on biodiversity, etc.). Topics such as species range, dispersion, migration, species extinction, human influence on fauna and flora development are raised.

Subject allows to learn the importance of wetlands, fauna of these areas, acquaints also with biology, ecology and threats to endangered representatives of invertebrates and vertebrates in these environments. It also presents different forms of actions to protect such habitats and endangered species inhabiting them

Ze względu na szerokie spektrum pojęć i tematów mieszczącym się w pojęciu bezpieczeństwo żywności, a jednocześnie przekonanie każdego człowiekowi, że wie wszystko o żywności ponieważ styka się z nią przez całe życie dlatego prowadzone prace obejmują zarówno laboratoryjne badania własne studentów dotyczące analizy różnych zanieczyszczeń żywności bądź jej składników odżywczych jak i teoretyczne i praktyczne rozważania dotyczące świadomości społeczeństwa o jakości żywności. The aim of the course is to turn the students attention to the soil as a complex habitat of high biological diversity, which supports the functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. The course provides information about the major groups of organisms that live in the soil and their role in the natural and managed ecosystems. A strong emphasis is put on the factors influencing soil biodiversity and the services provided by soil biodiversity. The course offers also some training in sampling and assessing the density and diversity of some soil animal groups and using them as soil biological quality indices.

The field practices introduce different field methods to understand the ecology and behavior of wild species on the example of colonial bird species. It presents methods of field research of the breeding biology and ecology, habitat selection, utilization of food resources, mating systems, breeding behaviour, migration, etc. It allows to learn techniques that can be useful to carry out conservation actions for the species. Celem zajęć jest możliwie pełne przedstawienie gatunków zwierząt ważnych dla nas z przyczyn gospodarczych, zdrowotnych, kulturowych i innych. Szczególną uwagę poświęcimy pasożytom człowieka i zwierząt udomowionych, szkodnikom upraw, zwierzętom jadowitym, drapieżnym i innym.

Wymagania wstępne: ogólna wiedza z zakresu biologii i zoologii uzyskana w toku I - III roku studiów.
